Lunchables: the business of bologna
I'm going to get straight to it with this one- Lunchables were created as a way for Oscar Mayer to sell more bologna versus other lunch meat.
During the 1980s, sales of bologna were dropping. Not just for Oscar Mayer, but every producer of industrially created meat was hit with low sales. Eating habits were adjusting to be healthier, and people began worrying about all the saturated fat inside. But, it was cheap to make and one of Oscar Mayer's main products.
I'm sure you know the song:
My bologna has a first name, its O-S-C-A-R
My bologna has a second name its M-A-Y-E-R
